Where DuPont calls come from

DuPont sits a few miles south of the I-5 and Steilacoom Road interchange. JBLM sits just to the east. The base draws thousands of workers in both directions every weekday. Most commute from Lacey, Olympia, Tacoma, and Lakewood. A worker who leaves the house with 70 percent battery for the 35-mile round trip in a cold rain can return with 5 percent by evening.

The trouble spots include the DuPont and Mounts Road exits, the JBLM main gate area, and the climb north toward Tacoma. Southbound toward Olympia, the Nisqually flats can be deceptive. A driver runs the heater through the open flats, then sees range drop fast on the rebuild grade past Lacey.

Pre-1980 housing in DuPont is low. The newer subdivisions are well-served by modern electrical panels. Apartment renters in Lakewood and Parkland drive the same corridor with thinner buffers and older housing.
