The traction pack hits zero on SR-16 at the Tacoma Narrows and the car stops rolling. You are on a tolled bridge over a strait, or on one of the two approaches, not a surface street with a charger around the corner. Get the hazards on, stay out of live lanes, and say which side of the water you are on.

Why the Narrows is a hard place to go empty

The Tacoma Narrows Bridge on SR-16 is tolled. It connects Tacoma to Gig Harbor across the strait. Tacoma has 6,651 registered EVs. Gig Harbor has 3,270. Pierce County as a whole had 25,042 in the Washington DOL file updated 2026-09-15.

The span sits over open water in damp wind. Heater load stacks on every winter crossing. Grades through Point Fosdick and Pioneer Way on the Gig Harbor side add more draw than a flat street. Tacoma hills climb off the tide flats toward the North End. A car with miles at the port doesn’t always have them uphill and across the bridge.

The current Narrows toll wasn’t confirmed for this page. WSDOT sets it. Check the agency’s toll information or your Good To Go account once you’re safe. An empty pack is the emergency. The bill isn’t.

If you’re already stopped in a travel lane on the span or the approaches, treat it as a roadway incident. WSDOT’s Incident Response Team responds to incidents on state highways. Published IRT materials mention motorists who’ve run out of gas. They don’t mention electric vehicles or mobile charging. Dial 911 to reach help on the roadway.

Shoulder rules for this span weren’t confirmed on WSDOT’s public pages for this article, so follow posted signs. If you’re in a live lane, stay in the car with the hazards on and wait for WSP. Don’t walk the deck looking for a charger.

Gig Harbor’s city roadside page covers Artondale, Pioneer Way, and Harborview Drive. Tacoma’s city roadside page covers I-5, the Dome, and downtown garages. This page is the crossing itself.

Tacoma side, the span, and Gig Harbor

Say which side of the water you are on.

Tacoma / SR-16 east of the span

The Tacoma approach feeds SR-16 from I-5 and the North End. If you go empty here, you are still in the city, but you are on a state route headed for a bridge. Don’t assume you can coast onto the span and recover on the other side.

The span

The Narrows is still a suspension bridge over a strait. If you stop on the deck, say Tacoma Narrows Bridge, plus eastbound toward Tacoma or westbound toward Gig Harbor. If you can give a milepost, say it. Do not climb the barrier.

Gig Harbor / SR-16 west of the span

Gig Harbor sits on the peninsula. Pioneer Way, Point Fosdick Drive, and Harborview Drive are the surface pins once you are off SR-16. A driver who’s low still faces a tolled crossing to get back to Tacoma. Stay in Gig Harbor if remaining range is tight.

University Place and the west Tacoma neighborhoods sit near the Tacoma landing. Don’t mix this crossing with SR 520 or the I-90 floating bridge. Those are Lake Washington. This is the Narrows.

Charge, jump, or wait for a tow

An empty pack is an out-of-charge recovery job. A local operator brings Level 2 power to the car if the car is in a place a van can reach. A 15 to 30 minute connection adds roughly 10 to 20 miles. That may be enough to leave an approach lot. It is not a plan for sitting on the deck.

A dead 12V is a no-wake. Overnight driveways in Artondale and Canterwood produce morning no-starts. Port and hospital lots in Tacoma produce the same after a shift. A matched operator jumps and can replace a failed 12V on site.

A tow wins on the span, in a live SR-16 lane, or when a charging van cannot legally stop. Chapter 46.55 RCW governs towing and impound. RCW 46.61.560 lets a disabled vehicle stop when stopping is unavoidable. RCW 46.61.590 still requires prompt removal.

Tacoma Power serves the city of Tacoma. Puget Sound Energy serves much of Pierce County outside Tacoma, including Gig Harbor. Home charger rebates do not put a truck on the bridge.

Charge Pro SEA is a referral service. It matches you with a licensed, independent local operator. The operator quotes and bills you. The brand sets no price and promises no ETA.
