A Chevy Silverado EV parked overnight at a Port of Tacoma jobsite will not wake up. The dashboard stays dark, the doors refuse to unlock, and the truck sits silent in the rain. The Ultium pack can read 80 percent range and none of that matters, because the small 12V battery is what boots the truck’s computers and closes the contactors to the high-voltage system. When it drops too low, the whole truck goes quiet.
The Silverado EV has one quirk that catches owners off guard more than most: the eTrunk, GM’s name for the front trunk, opens electrically by fob, dash button, or a button on the front fascia. If the 12V dies, none of those work, and the 12V battery itself sits inside that eTrunk. There is a mechanical workaround for exactly this situation, and it is worth knowing before you stand in a Kent driveway trying to figure it out with a dead phone flashlight.
What’s actually wrong
A no-start on a Silverado EV is a dead 12V battery until you prove otherwise. The 12V runs the low-voltage electronics that wake the truck and bridge it to the high-voltage Ultium pack. If the 12V can’t hold enough voltage, that handshake never finishes, so nothing turns on even though the main battery reads fine.
The usual triggers are the same ones that hit any EV. A truck parked for weeks that slowly drained the 12V. A worn-out 12V nearing the end of its life. A DC-DC converter that is no longer topping it off the way it should. Every EV uses a DC-DC converter to step the main pack’s voltage down to roughly 12 to 14 volts to keep the small battery charged while the truck sits. When that converter or the battery itself starts failing, you get the same result: a dark cabin and a truck that won’t respond. A jump gets you moving again, but a 12V near the end of its life will strand you again within days.
What happens when the 12V drops too low
Owners on Silverado EV forums describe the same pattern. Doors stop unlocking, screens stay dark, and the truck won’t shift into drive even though the range readout shows plenty of charge left. Because the 12V feeds dozens of separate modules at once, a low-voltage event does not produce one clean error message. It produces a stack of unrelated warnings all at once, which is exactly what a bad 12V looks like on this platform.
Do not try to clear a stack of warnings by restarting the truck over and over. Bringing the 12V back into its normal range with a jump or a charge is what actually resolves it. If your truck has recently been serviced or left in a maintenance state, do not just start pulling 12V terminals to force a reset. GM is specific that disconnecting the 12V at the wrong moment can turn a simple jump into a trip back to the dealer, so when in doubt, call for a diagnosis instead of guessing.
Where the 12V battery lives, and the eTrunk problem
GM put the Silverado EV’s 12V battery under the hood inside the eTrunk, on the passenger side, under a plastic cover held on by a few tabs. Straightforward enough with power. The complication is that the eTrunk release itself is electric, so a dead 12V also means no button, no fob, and no fascia release. It is the same lockout problem Hummer EV and Porsche Taycan owners run into with their own frunks.
How to open the eTrunk with a dead 12V
GM built a mechanical workaround for exactly this. Under the dash on the driver’s side, down near the lower left, there is a gray release cable with a loop at the end, in the same spot a hood release lever would sit on a gas truck. Pull that cable twice and the eTrunk releases mechanically, with no electrical power involved. It takes a little feel to find on the first try since it is tucked up under the dash, but it works with the truck completely dead.
Once the eTrunk pops, lift the plastic cover on the passenger side to expose the 12V battery and its terminals. A flathead screwdriver helps if the tabs are stiff, but go slow so you do not crack the cover.
Jump terminals and how to safely wake it up
With the cover off, you will see the 12V battery’s terminals directly. The negative terminal is a 10mm bolt connection, and the positive sits alongside it. Connect a jump pack or donor vehicle’s positive clamp to positive first, then the negative clamp to the Silverado’s negative terminal or an unpainted metal ground point nearby. Give it a minute before trying to power the truck on.
If a standard jump pack will not wake a deeply discharged truck on the first try, let it sit connected for a few minutes longer before giving up on it. A 12V that is this far gone sometimes needs a slower trickle before it holds enough charge to complete the startup handshake.
