What the lithium 12V does

Tesla moved to a lithium 12V in newer Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The lithium pack is smaller and lighter than the older AGM. It runs the same accessory systems and the same contactor that connects the high-voltage pack to the motor.

When the lithium 12V is too low, the contactor stays open and the car appears completely dead. The high-voltage pack is almost certainly still healthy. The 12V just needs a wake-up call.

Why the lithium 12V dies here

The 35 to 45F band is the local pattern. Cold-soaked batteries lose effective capacity. A lithium 12V that sat fine in a mild garage will die after a week in a 35F unheated apartment garage.

Long airport sits are the most common trigger. Sea-Tac’s garage holds over 12,000 stalls across eight floors. A Tesla parked on the dark long-term floors for a week returns with a dead 12V, not an empty pack.

The lithium chemistry handles deep discharge differently than AGM. A lithium 12V that goes below 10 percent state of charge may not recover fully, even after a long drive. A jump starts the car but the 12V may need replacement soon.

How to jump the lithium 12V

  1. Open the front trunk and locate the jump points under the red cover.
  2. Connect the positive clamp from the jump pack to the positive jump point.
  3. Connect the negative clamp to the ground point on the body.
  4. Turn on the jump pack. The dashboard should power up within a few seconds.
  5. If the dashboard does not power up, leave the jump pack connected for 5 to 10 minutes.
  6. Once the dashboard lights up, disconnect in reverse order.
  7. Drive for at least 30 minutes to let the DC-DC converter recharge the 12V.

The lithium 12V accepts charge at a different rate than AGM. A driver who jumps the 12V should plan to drive for an extended period or charge at a working charger to bring the 12V back to a healthy state.
